ooh pic-turs

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Three posts in a week I’ve done. I’m so excited I could even be a little bit sick. I’m turning into some sort of prolific writer, next thing I’ll be publishing books and be all famous and that.

So this morning at home I finally got around to scanning in the pictures I took with my Holga whilst I was on holiday, and when I went to the balloon fiesta as well. This all happened literally months ago, so it’s testament to my awesomess that I’ve only just done anything with them.

What better to do than stick a couple up here so you can see them with your eyes! LooK! Here they are! Yay!

Holga Red Arrows

What these seem to show is that in Menorca, the Holga vignettes way more than anywhere else in the world – weird. Also it shows that trying to capture action with a Holga is like trying to watch Susan Boyle singing without wanting to kill yourself – impossible.

shock horror

In an event the likes of which has never before been seen on these pages (except here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here), I find myself having purchased another camera or camera related gadget. I am beyond help.

This one also uses film – but is a bit more pratical than the Holga, first because it uses the same lens as my Nikon D200 and second because it uses normal 35mm film.

Nikon F80

So naturally I also needed to purchase this to go with it:

Lucky Film

Which is cheapo special lucky chinese crap film which is black and white and improbably cheap, almost certainly because it’s rubbish.

The F80 seems a nice enough bit of kit anyway – even if it’s tiny compared to my other Nikon!

Nikon F80 and Nikon D200

So there you go, my nine hundred and seventy fifth camera – or at least so it seems…

In other news we’ve sold our house and haven’t bought a new one, so we are probably going to be homeless just before christmas. Anybody got a sofa we can sleep on? It’s only me, the wife, and several bags full of camera equipment. And a PC. Oh, and an Xbox. And a TV. And some other stuff.

You won’t even know we are there.

kenya – the photos

Friday, November 20th, 2009

As I mentioned before, we went to Kenya, and it was bleeding brilliant. We did a four day Kenyan Encounters Safari, followed by 9 days in the Turtle Bay Beach Club in a village called Watamu. Lovely place, lovely people, can’t recommend it enough. I took about 3,000 photos, most of them with this bad boy:

D200 with Sigma 150-500

I’ve written what has turned out to be a very long description of our time on safari – which I have no doubt that nobody will read, so if you want to look at the pictures, click on this thing here: Kenyan Encounters photos

Hope you like them – I liked taking them!

exhibitionist

Friday, November 13th, 2009

You know when you agree to something which seems like a good idea, then months later suddenly you’ve got to actually do it and you’ve done nothing at all to prepare?

A few months ago I was contacted by Alex Tsander who asked me if I would like to do a joint exhibition of my photography alongside him and another photographer.

The theme of the exhibition was that photography doesn’t need to be complicated or require expensive digital cameras and computers.

Anyway, fast forward a few months and the exhibition opened last night and is now on at Photographique a gallery on Baldwin Street in Bristol. The exhibition is called Photo Povera and runs until 19th of November.

I’m showing some of my Holga work, Alex is showing his work, and another photographer called Clare is showing work taken on cheap Chinese “Lucky Pan” film.

I took a quick snap after hanging my photos:

Gallery

There are a few more than this – I’m quite pleased with how they came out when printed large.

I had some faint hope of selling a couple, which probably won’t happen – I did however end up buying one of Clare’s photos!
